Commander Rules

EDH Tournament Rules for B Side Games:

It being understood that we are unsanctioned format, Wizards of the Coast has given the judge/store owner the ability to enforce the rules at their discretion. Because everyone who competes pays to be in the in tournament, we are going to try to keep the tournament standard and stick to the rules for sanctioned tournaments as much as possible. It is important to note that the action of buying in to the tournament is a nonverbal agreement to follow the below rules. You may also be asked to follow these rules at the time of buy in. Thank you for your cooperation.

B Side Games Scoring System for EDH tournaments:

To try and fix the discrepancies in the current point system B Side Games has chosen to adopt this scoring system to make the system more judicial. It is adopted for play 17 July 2020.

Scoring for each game will be as follows:

  • The Last player standing at the end of the game will receive 3 points. The second to last player will receive 2 points. The third to last player will receive 1 point.

  • Other points can be earned through various actions in the game:

    • Saving a player from losing the game will reward 1 point

    • Giving lethal damage to a player using combat damage will reward 1 point.

    • Winning with an alternate win condition will reward 2 points.

  • If the game is not able to be completed all players in the pod will receive 1 point.

  • The Final round of the tournament will be decided differently with all players involved in the top tier pod playing until a winner is selected.

Additional Rules for Deck building for EDH at B-Side Tournaments:

  • Every card contained in your deck must meet these qualifications:

    • A genuine card produced by Wizards of the Coast.

    • The Card does not have a silver Border (These cards come from Unhinged, Unglued, and unstable and are only legal to play in specified formats and illegal in sanctioned tournaments).

    • The card has the official magic background or is a dual sided card legal for play. (Gold bordered cards do not have the official Magic the Gathering Background and not considered legal for sanctioned tournament play.)

    • For official deck building rules see these websites. https://mtgcommander.net/index.php/rules/

  •

Conceding must be done only at sorcery speed and can only be done under these conditions:

  • The board lock makes it impossible for any other players to win the game

  • If 2 players remain, a player may concede if the current board state makes the game unwinnable.

  • If a player concedes the points are still given as if the continuing player won through combat damage.

  • The Judge should be notified before concession.

Additional rules to promote fair gameplay.

  • At all times maintain a sportsman like appearance and demeanor. We are all here to have fun!

  • The Judge/Store Owner has final say on all disputes and retains the right to invoke action upon players who are not maintaining a healthy playing environment.

  • You may only take up to 4 extra turns in a row. Another player must have a turn before you may take more.

  • You may not win the game before turn 6. Combos (Infinite or otherwise) are limited to 4 activations per turn before turn 6.

  • After turn 6 the limit on combos is removed for the rest of the game.

  • Pods will be limited to a max of four individuals and no less than three unless the top pod is playing for first or second place.

  • Rounds will be limited to 1 hour and 1 game will be played. 3 Rounds will be played.

Intolerable conduct:

The Store Owner or Judge reserves all rights and privileges to invoke disciplinary action upon players to their discretion for intolerable conduct. Actions which may result in said disciplinary action include cheating, fighting with another player (verbally and non-verbally), and intentionally forfeiting a game. Action can include loss of points up to forced forfeiture of the tournament. Refunds for buy in will be given out at the discretion of the store owner and B Side Games reserves the right to deny a refund to any player who participates in intolerable conduct. Repeated offenses may result in a permanent ban from competitive play at B Side Games. Any concerns of this nature should be taken up with a Judge or Store Owner.

At all times remember that commander is an ever-expanding format and caters to old and new players alike. If there are any suggestions to have for rules changes, you can at the judge in the Magic the Gathering Discord Chat for B Side Games at @Troy or message him a private discord message.
